Consultant Gynaecologist

“I’m originally from Trinidad and I’ve always wanted to be a Doctor. I am the child of two doctors, a surgeon and an anaesthetist so I’ve wanted to do medicine from the age of 4. I used to operate on my teddy bears so my career path has always been pretty clear to me.

I went to an all-girls high school and my brother went to an all-boys high school and girls and boys were treated exactly the same in terms of science and maths subjects being encouraged so that was never an obstacle for me.

I then became a doctor in Trinidad and then came to the UK to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology which I immediately fell in love with from my first day working in the specialism. I trained throughout the Northwest and ironically my first job was as a Senior House Officer (SHO) at Saint Mary’s, so this is the first hospital I entered in the UK. I went on to achieve my dream of becoming a consultant at Saint Mary’s in 2009.

I really enjoy the atmosphere here, I have wonderful colleagues and I absolutely love patient interaction and that’s something I will never tire of. I think dealing with patients and helping women is the best part of the job.

I think women working in STEM subjects gives them options. My mother drummed into my head that a woman should always have a profession so that she can be self- reliant and not dependant on anyone else. I took that to heart and working in STEM has helped me to achieve my goals in life.”
